There's a moment at check-in that every hotelier knows: the guest receives their room key. In most hotels, it's a forgettable plastic card. But hand a guest a wooden key card — warm to the touch, beautifully grained, laser-engraved with your logo — and you've created a memory. That's the power of material choice in hospitality branding.
Why Wood Works
Wooden key cards appeal on multiple levels simultaneously. They're tactile — the natural grain and warmth of real wood register immediately in the hand. They're visual — the colour and pattern of each card is subtly unique. They're sustainable — FSC-certified wood from managed forests. And they're aspirational — guests associate natural materials with luxury and authenticity.
Wood Species Available
- Bamboo — Light colour, minimal grain, contemporary feel. Popular with modern design-forward hotels in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
- Cherry — Warm red-brown tone, fine grain. The most requested wood for South African luxury hotels. Pairs beautifully with warm interior palettes.
- Walnut — Deep brown, rich grain pattern. Premium choice for heritage properties and classic luxury hotels.
- Beech — Clean, pale colour with subtle grain. Works well with Scandinavian-inspired or minimalist hotel interiors.
The Laser Engraving Advantage
Wood key cards are customised through laser engraving, which burns the design directly into the wood surface. The result is permanent, tactile, and impossible to replicate with printing. Guests can feel the logo under their fingertips. The engraving adds depth and craftsmanship that printed PVC cannot match.
Design Considerations
Laser engraving works best with clean, bold designs. Fine-line artwork and small text render less clearly than bold logos and simple graphics. Photographic images are not suitable for laser engraving — these require UV printing on the wood surface, which is available but less common. Most hotels opt for their logo on the front and room number or Wi-Fi details on the reverse.
RFID Technology
Wood key cards use the same RFID inlays as standard PVC cards. The wooden substrate is RF-transparent, meaning it doesn't affect read range or reliability. All major technologies are supported: MIFARE Classic, DESFire, HID iCLASS, and more. Compatible with Dormakaba, SALTO, Assa Abloy, and all major hotel lock systems installed in South Africa.
